Carlisle's Marine, Inc. was started in 1946 by Merle Carlisle
as a part time business. In the beginning he built a few
wooden runabouts from 12 to 16 feet. In 1949 he became a
Mercury Outboard dealer. The business began to grow
and the retail store was built on a piece of adjoining
property. In th mid 1950's his son, Merle Carlisle, Jr.
became involved in the business. At that time they were
selling factory wooden boats built by Trojan, Pennyann
and Owens. When inboard/outboard boats were
developed there were very few boats that would accept
them. The company would buy the outboard versions and
rebuild the transom and install the I/O's.
In the mid 1980's Rick Carlisle, Merle Jr.'s son, started
working for the company. Together they expanded the
company to start selling fishing boats and pleasure boats
as well as selling fishing tackle. The company finally
outgrew its old location at Churchman's Rd in Newark and
moved thirty miles south to its current location In Smyrna,
Delaware. The new locations size has allowed the
company to expand into selling accessories, crabbing
supplies , tackle, bait , and hunting supplies.
